Three blocks to build on.

Measured cutting charts for nine-patch, half-square triangle and log cabin blocks.

Warm fabric pieces arranged for a quilt

Original measured drafts with 1/4 in seams; sewn samples are not yet photographed. Diagrams show finished proportions.

How do you make a nine-patch?

Nine squares at 4.5 × 4.5 in: five dark, four light.

Sew three rows of three with 1/4 in seams. Press alternate row seams in opposite directions, match intersections and join. Math: 3 × 4.5 − 4 × 0.25 = 12.5 in unfinished.

How do you make a half-square triangle?

One light and one dark square, each 5 × 5 in; makes two units.

Put squares right sides together. Mark a diagonal. Sew 1/4 in to both sides of it, cut on the marked line, press open, and trim each unit to 4.5 in square with seam on the diagonal. Outer 1/4 in seams leave 4 in finished.

How do you make a log cabin?

Centre: one 3.5 in square. Logs, in order: 2 × 3.5, 2 × 5, 2 × 5, 2 × 6.5, 2 × 6.5, 2 × 8, 2 × 8, 2 × 9.5 in. Each listed size is one piece.

Keep the centre upright. Add logs clockwise: right, bottom, left, top, twice. Use 1/4 in seams and press after each. A 2 in cut strip adds 1.5 in finished. Centre 3 in + four strip widths × 1.5 = 9 in finished.
