Quilting
Quilting for beginners
Start with accurate squares and a small top before buying a bed-size fabric bundle.

What are the three layers?
A quilt combines a pieced top, batting and backing. Batting is the middle insulating layer. Binding encloses the outer edge after quilting. Follow the batting label for spacing between quilted lines.
How do you start piecing?
Our nine-patch uses nine 4.5 in squares. Sew them in three rows using 1/4 in seams, then join the rows. The block measures 12.5 in before joining other blocks and 12 in after its outer seams.
How do you prepare the sandwich?
Press the top and backing. Our calculator adds 4 in on each side of the top for backing; confirm your quilter’s requirement. Smooth the layers and baste from the centre outward. Do not stretch the top to fit.
What should you finish first?
Make one block, check its measurements and use it as a practice mat. Plan quilting lines within your batting requirements, then trim square and bind. The calculator shows its assumptions so you can change the project before cutting.
