Serger vs sewing machine

Use a serger for an overlocked edge; use the documented sewing functions for other construction.

What does a serger add?

A serger uses loopers and several threads to wrap a cut edge. Differential feed moves two feed sections at different rates; adjust it on scraps to manage stretching or gathering. The MO-654DE documents 2/3/4-thread operation.

Can one replace the other?

Do not assume it. A conventional machine handles enclosed seams, buttonholes and topstitching when those functions are documented. A coverstitch is a separate seam type; a 4-thread serger does not automatically include it.

Which should you buy first?

List your existing machine’s gaps. If you need buttonholes and flat construction, confirm those functions before buying an edge-finishing machine. Compare threading instructions before committing to a serger.
