How to choose a sewing machine

Start with the seams you need to make, then compare documented functions.

What will you sew?

Write three actual projects: a woven bag, a stretch hem, a quilt or a hooped design. A straight-stitch quilting machine cannot replace zigzag for every task. A serger trims and overcasts edges; check whether you also need a conventional machine.

Which specifications matter first?

Check the needle system, stitch type, buttonhole method and work space. Arm space is the room to the right of the needle, not the width of an extension table. A stitch count can include alphabets; our tables preserve that distinction.

What should you ask a dealer?

Bring a sample of the complete seam with every layer. Ask about service, included feet and the warranty exclusions. Compare the exact model suffix and market. Published speed is a ceiling, not a result we measured.
