How to hem pants by machine or hand

Mark the hem while wearing the shoes you plan to use, then measure before cutting.

Hands mending a well-loved garment

For practice, allow 30–60 minutes (planning estimate). Bring a fabric scrap, suitable needle and matching thread. Use the model manual for machine work.

How do you mark the new length?

Turn the trousers to the intended length and pin both legs. Take them off before sewing. Mark the finished fold and a second line 1 in below it for this woven-fabric example. Confirm the length on both legs before trimming.

How do you sew a machine hem?

Finish the cut edge with zigzag if it frays. Press the 1 in allowance inside and pin. Sew from the wrong side close to the finished raw edge with a compatible needle. A visible straight-stitch hem suits casual woven trousers; match the original finish when needed.

How do you sew a hand hem?

Keep the pressed allowance. Catch only a few garment threads with small slip stitches, then move through the inside fold. Keep thread relaxed so the front does not pucker. Press with heat allowed by the fabric label.

What changes for knits?

Use a stretch-compatible stitch and needle from the model manual. Do not apply this woven example unchanged to stretch trousers. Try the complete folded seam on a scrap first.

What if the practice seam goes wrong?

Stop and check the threading, needle and fabric combination before changing settings. Use the stitch fixer to match the symptom to a first check.
