Hand embroidery for beginners
Use a small hoop, a plain fabric square and a few short lines before filling a large design.

How do you set up the fabric?
Place woven fabric in a hoop and tighten it evenly without distorting the weave. Transfer a simple line with a removable method suitable for the fabric. Choose a needle with an eye that admits your thread.
Where should you begin stitching?
Start with running and backstitch. Keep tension light; fabric should stay flat after leaving the hoop. Use the stitch library for eight small practice shapes.
How do you finish a small sampler?
Secure thread tails on the back without pulling the surface. Remove the hoop and inspect for puckering. Follow thread and fabric care labels together. Frame or hem a practice sampler after checking the marks can be removed.
