Cross stitch basics and Aida counts
Count describes the number of crosses per inch when you stitch one cross over one Aida square.

How does count change the size?
Divide chart stitches by fabric count. A 70 × 70 stitch chart is 5 × 5 in on 14-count Aida, 4.375 × 4.375 in on 16-count, and about 3.89 × 3.89 in on 18-count. Add a finishing border separately.
Where do you place the first stitch?
Find the centre of the chart and the fabric. Work each cross over one Aida square, keeping top arms in the same direction. Count empty squares as well as filled ones.
How do you choose materials?
DMC describes 14-count Aida as a beginner starting point. Follow the pattern for strand count; do not infer it solely from fabric count. Leave enough fabric outside the design for the planned mounting or hem.
