3 Tips to Level Up Your Sewing Skills

There comes a point in a sewing hobby when you’re ready to move to the next level. You might be tired of the type of things you’ve been creating, maybe you’re in a slump, or perhaps you found a new type of pattern that inspires you. This yearning to learn more can hit you whatever level of sewist you are, whether you are brand new to sewing or a skilled veteran. We’ve got three tips to get you started on your journey to level up your sewing game.

Level Up Tip 1: It’s In the (Pattern) Details

Read the pattern instructions fully before starting your project! Yes, the pattern envelope and description can get you started on the correct size, fabric quantities, and notions needed to complete the project. However, reading them beforehand will give you a better idea of how the project will come together, and I find so many additional details in the actual instructions. Pattern designers sometimes provide tips and tricks for how to complete a complicated step or even supply a link to a helpful video. I like to watch these before I start stitching. Knowing these steps are coming up can really give you an advantage when you get to those tricky bits.

Level Up Tip 2: Make a Muslin

Perfect your creation by making a muslin. I know it takes more time and just like with reading the instructions, delays the gratification of a newly sewn masterpiece. However, I have learned so many things about patterns, sewing, and fitting my own body from making a muslin first. Fit adjustments are the most important reason to make one, but you can also check the style, shape, and ease of the pattern as well. It allows you to try those new-to-you techniques you read about in the pattern instructions before cutting into your nice fabric! Bonus, you might get a wearable muslin that you love, too!

Level Up Tip 3: Accept the Challenge!

Challenge yourself! The best way I have found to level up my sewing skills is to tackle a challenging project. Don’t get me wrong — I love sewing the tried-and-true patterns that I have made a dozen or more times; however, I learn something every time I take on a project that incorporates new skills. Try a pair of tailored pants or jeans with a zip fly if you have already had success with an elastic waistband pattern. Make a winter coat this year instead of buying one. If sewing bags is your thing, try working with leather or making a wallet with lots of pockets and features. Choosing a project or pattern that introduces a skill you haven’t tried is a surefire way to level up your skills.
